Watch or Nah?: I Feel Pretty

Hello World!

Change everything without changing anything!

Film/ Television Show Information

Name: I Feel Pretty

Genre: Comedy

Director : Abby Kohn, Marc Silverstein

Main Cast:   Amy Schumer, Michelle Williams, Rory Scovel, Aidy Bryant, Busy Phillips

Ratings

1 = Trash

2 =Meh

3 = OK

4 = Solid

5 = Bomb

Acting/ Performance

Comments:
When Schumer really locked in and committed to the role of this delightfully delusional character, she was great, but it took her a while to get there. Also, Michelle Williams was great playing the comically stereotypical idea of American beauty. It was nice to see her play a lighter role, and she stole the show every time she was in a scene. But overall, the acting was good from the entire cast.

Writing/Screenplay

X

Comments:
The story is simple and the joke works as long as you don't think about it too much. The script is funny enough to be mostly entertaining, and there is a good message about inner beauty just thrown in there at the end.

Cinematography

X

Comments:
There was literally nothing special visually about this movie, and usually movies shot in NYC do so much cinematography to showcase the city, but not this one.

Costume Design

X

Comments:
For a woman that was supposedly so insecure that all she ever wanted was to be beautiful, Renee didn't really dress as though was insecure about her appearance. And even if that was her comfort clothing, when she gained all her confidence, there should have been a more major change in her wardrobe. She now thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world, so I thought she would dress differently.

Editing/Special Effects

X

Comments:
Also, there is nothing noteworthy or special about this movie in this category as well.

Sound/Music

X

Comments:
The music was adequately picked and well placed. I particularly liked the use of Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys.

Overall Rating (average the rating numbers above)  - 3.3/5.0

Recommendation: Watch! 😏

I Feel Pretty is the story of a woman who was so insecure that all she dreamed about was being beautiful, and by some strange magic her dreams came true. She became the most beautiful woman in the world, but it was all in her head. But what wasn't in her head, was her newfound confidence and fearlessness, and that's why audiences root for Renee. She is hilariously delusional, but also charming, until she isn't. And then you've had a enough of the joke, but it works for a while. This film is mostly funny, but after a while the joke just feels overplayed and you're ready for it to be over. But overall this movie will make you laugh, and delivers a good message about inner beauty. It also throws in a cute little love story. I think this movie is a "girl's night" type of movie. It has all the feels about loving yourself, beauty, confidence, etc.  So I recommend women go see this film with their best gal pals. I think this film is definitely geared toward women, but it is funny enough that it could be enjoyed by anyone. Overall, I don't think this movie is a "must- see", but if you do see it, I don't think you'll regret it.

Tuesdays with Kerin: Another Wednesday Update

Hello World!

So yeah it's another Wednesday update, so maybe I should rename this series Tuesdays/Wednesdays with Kerin... nah! That's too much extra work!

So what's been happening? What's up? I always tell you guys what's going on with me, but never ask about you. How rude! So let me know in the comments.

Rampage PosterBut back to me... let's see what did I do last week...

I didn't end up going to the Rampage early screening, however I did see it on Sunday, so a review could be coming soon!

I Feel Pretty PosterHowever, I did go to the advance screening of I Feel Pretty, and might be going to another tonight, but that is not indicative of  how I feel about this movie.

Let me know which movie I should review!

With my newly found free time last week, I started going to the gym, which is gross! I hate going to the gym. There is literally nothing about it I like. But I need to workout, and I like being active. But I'm more of sport or activity type of person. Like sign me up for hip-hop cardio any day!

NBA playoffs stated this weekend!!! And the Warriors are back! They just flipped the switch and are playing like champions again. All the games I've watched have been mostly good, even though there have been some blowouts.  But my first round picks are:

  • The West: Rockets, Warriors, Thunder, Pelicans
  • The East:  Wizards, Celtics, Heat, Cavaliers
Really, I'm just hoping for some upsets!

Anyway, there's your quick little update about what I've been up to this past week!

If there are any specific posts you'd like to see, let me know via comment, twitter, instagram, etc.

Au Revoir,

Makeup Tutorial: Least Used Products

Hello World!

Whenever I do my makeup, I find myself always reaching for the same products. I have like 2-3 products that I'll just keep in rotation, or I'll buy something new, and then only use that for a few months. What can I say? I like what I like.

But I was going through my makeup collection, and I rediscovered some products that I really like, but for some reason, I never reach for. So, I created this look using the least used products that I have!

Here's the tutorial on how I got this look!

Step 1: Prime! I used the Mac Prep + Prime Skin Base Visage. I like this primer because its a lotion, so it feels just like a moisturizer, but it's gel-based, so it's not greasy, and it's super lightweight. But I never reach for it because it adds radiance, and I usually try to use oil-controlling primers.

Step 2: Foundation!  I used the Marc Jacobs Genius Gel Supercharged Foundation in the shade Cocoa. Unfortunately, this foundation is discontinued, but I really like it, because it's lightweight, has good coverage, and leaves your skin looking radiant. However, this foundation is not long wearing on oily skin, so I never use it, unless I only need to have my makeup on for a short amount of time.

Step 3: Concealer!
I applied concealer to brighten my under eye area and cover any dark circles and to highlight the bridge of my nose I used the Benefit Boi-ing concealer in the shade Medium. This concealer is good because it's super full coverage and very long lasting. However I don't like to use it, because it's really difficult to blend and it feels like a greasy balm.

Step 4: Powder! For this look I used two different powders. First, I set my entire face, with the It Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder. I like this powder because it leaves the skin looking and feeling really smooth, but it's also stark white, so I pass, since I'm not usually in the mood for flashback!
Then I baked my under eye using the Sephora Bright Set Loose Finishing Powder. I don't really know why I stop using this powder. I used to use it all the time, because it's a really good yellow shade, that really highlights my skin tone.

Step 5: Eyebrows!  To fill in my brows, I used Benefit ka-Brow! in the shade 5. This is a great brow cream-gel, where you can create both soft natural brows and bold full brows, but I don't tend to use it simply because I prefer brow pencils. I then set my brows with Benefit 24-Hr Brow Setter.

Step 6: Eyes!
I used the Urban Decay Naked Smoky Palette. This was actually my first time using this palette, and it's been in my collection for a very long time. I really love the quality of Urban Decay shadows, particularly the Naked collection, but the colors in this palette are pretty cool-tone, and I usually gravitate to warmer palettes. To create this look, I first applied the shade Password (neutral brown) into my crease. Then I blended the shade Whiskey (deep golden brown) into the outer portion of my eye. I then placed the shade Radar (brown-gold) all over my lid, and I finished by applying the shade Dirtysweet (cool gold) as an inner-corner and brow bone highlight.

Step 7: Bronzer!
I applied bronzer to the perimeter and contours of my face. I mixed the shades 3 & 4 from the Tarte Tartiest Contour palette III . I like the contour and bronzer shades in this palette, but I don't really care for blush and highlighters, so I don't really use this palette.

Step 8: Highlight!  I applied highlighter lightly to the tops of my checks, browbone, and bridge of my nose. I used Becca x Chrissy Teigan Glow Face palette, and used the shade 2, Beach Nectar. I like all the shades in this palette, and there is no real reason I never use it. I guess it just gets lost in the bottom of my collection.

Step 9: Blush! I applied blush in between my highlight and bronzer in a downward motion from the top of my cheekbones to the apple of my cheeks. I used the shade La Vida Mocha from the Beauty Bakerie Coffee & Cocoa Bronzer palette. This is a super vibrant, super pigmented, red-orange blush that looks great on dark skin. But I don't really wear blush, so I hardly ever use it.

Step 10: Set! I used e.l.f. Makeup Mist & Set  to set my makeup. I talked about this setting spray in my best of e.l.f post because it really is great, but I never use it because my Boscia White Charcoal mattifying setting spray is always sitting conveniently on my beauty desk, so I just grab it instead of searching for another setting spray.

Step 11: Eyeliner and mascara!
  I applied liner to both my top and bottom lash line and I used the Eyeko Skinny Liquid eyeliner. I like this liner because it has a very precise tip and goes on very smoothly. I don't use it much, because I just don't wear liquid liner that often.

For my lashes, I first applied the Lancome Cils Booster lash primer to my top and bottom lashed,  and I really like it and it does make your lashes look longer and fuller, but it's just an extra step, I don't have time for.

I then followed that with the Lancome Hypnose Drama mascara. This is great mascara with a really unique brush, but I have so many mascaras, it just gets lost in the collection.

Step 12: Lips! I finished the look off with the Beauty Bakerie Lip Whip in the in the shade Hazelnut Swirl from the Beauty Bakerie x Gabby Douglas collection. This shade is beautiful metallic brown gold, and it looks great on and lasts forever! But I never reach for it, because it's uncomfortable to wear and almost impossible to remove.

Step 13: Selfie! Share on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, kerinskorner.com, etc.

Happy Makeup Monday!

Kerin's Top Ten: YA Book to Film Adaptations

Hello World!

We live in a world were adaptations are becoming far more common than original ideas in film and television.  This is especially true for YA novels and series. And, why not, right? If people enjoyed the book, then they'll enjoy the movie or TV show as well, right?. Well, that's not always the case. Actually, it's usually not the case. Film adaptations of books are hard to do, because they are different mediums, and some things that work in a book don't translate well on the screen. Which is why more often than not, fans of the book, are disappointed in the movie or TV show adaptation. It would be almost too easy to create a list of book adaptations that I didn't like, so I thought I'd challenge myself, and think of the ones that did well. So without further ado, here's my top ten favorite young adult book to film adaptations.

*Disclaimer: This list only includes adaptations where I've both read the book and see the film. If I've only seen one, then it's not on the list.*

10. A Wrinkle in Time

9. The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

8. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

5. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

4. Love, Simon (Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda)

Tuesdays With Kerin: Free Time

Hello World!

Aye I'm back and  I'm better
I want you bad as ever...

Just kidding, I'm back, but I don't think I'm any better, and I certainly don't want you anymore than usual, but I don't know I guess I had a little Bryson Tiller in me today.

Anyway, so how did you guys like the spam of last week? That was four post in one day! Like that was a lot. And it wasn't easy. I love watching movies, and writing reviews, but they are not easy. Reviews take a lot of time and thought. And when I got to A Quiet Place, my brain was just like no, I'm done. So I don't plan on ever doing that again... so I guess I'll just have to stick to posting a on regular basis, so I'm not doing catch-up work.

So I only have to update you guys on a few days, since my last update was Friday, and really nothing happened this weekend. I didn't even go the to the movies this weekend (*gasp*). I know shocking, and there are finally new movies out I haven't seen yet. But no worries I will makeup for this week, now that I have more free time.

But how sway? Well, I quit my job yesterday. What? No, you didn't! Well , yes I did. I won't get into all the gritty details, but I didn't feel like the management and leadership valued my time and my efforts, so I walked out, and that's that. But now my afternoons, are completely free.
I Feel Pretty Poster

Now I have time go to advance screenings. I've had passes to so many screenings in the past, that I couldn't make because of work, but now I free to enjoy myself.

Speaking of advance screenings, I have two I plan on going to this week - Rampage and I Feel Pretty. Which is perfect, because those are two movies, I don't really want to pay to see per se. Not that I really pay for movies, because you know, MoviePass.

I saw Midnight Sun last night, so let me know if you guys want a review for it. I was not planning on writing on, because that movie is like mad old, and I like to give you guys reviews of pretty recent movies. But if you want, you can have it.

Also, thanks to everyone you participated in my giveaway. I announced the winners on twitter on Saturday, so go check that out!  And I think that's all folks!

Watch or Nah?: A Quiet Place

Hello World,

If they hear you, they hunt you. Here's my review of A Quiet Place!

Film/ Television Show Information

Name: A Quiet Place

Genre: Horror, Thriller

Director : John Krasinski

Main Cast:   John Kransinki, Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe

Ratings

1 = Trash

2 =Meh

3 = OK

4 = Solid

5 = Bomb

Acting/ Performance

X

Comments:
This film has a stellar cast from top to bottom. Everyone brought their A-game, and had excellent chemistry with each other. So much was expressed with so few lines.

Writing/Screenplay

X

Comments:
This film gets major points for originality. It is not only an original story, but it's also a thriller like none other. It's presents a fear not used in films before - fear of being too loud. And the tension in the story never lets down - it is intense right from the jump, and continues that way into the end, always keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.

Cinematography

X

Comments:
There was so much presented on the screen without the actors even having to say anything. So much of the story was explained to us just visually.

Costume Design

X

Comments:
I think the costume design was good. They look like scavengers in a post-apocalypse world, but then still like a traditional farm family that was trying. The girls still wore dresses and skirts and the guys were in flannel. They looked the part of a family using whatever they could find, but still holding to their values.

Editing/Special Effects

X

Comments:
The outstanding special effects in this film was really the sound. And the sound was so great, that it gets points in both categories. Also the monster looked real, but unworldly.

Sound/Music

X

Comments:
Sound was everything in this film. The sound or lack of sound was really the driving force of the movie. This film effectively used music and sound effects to create tension and draw focus. The sound was like an extra character on the screen - showing the audience where to look and telling the audience how to feel.

Overall Rating (average the rating numbers above)  - 4.5/5.0

Recommendation: Watch! 😏

A Quiet Place is an instant modern classic in the thriller genre. Anyone who is a fan of the horror/ thriller genre should definitely watch this movie. This movie is one of a kind. It has the feel of the classic thriller movies we love, but with an original twist. This film is well-written and even better performed. This film draws you in from the beginning, and keeps you on the edge of your seat. This feel masterfully uses sound and music to create tension and intensity. The quieter it gets, the louder it seems. This film really takes your breathe away, yet it is not overtly scary. This film doesn't fall victim to the overuse of jump scares, but it could definitely cause you to jump! Overall, I would definitely recommend this film. It's both interesting and original, and you won't regret watching it.

Watch or Nah?: Pacific Rim: Uprising

Hello World,

Rise Up! Here's my review of Pacific Rim Uprising!

Film/ Television Show Information

Name: Pacific Rim: Uprising

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Director : Steven S. DeKnight

Main Cast: :  John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny

Ratings

1 = Trash

2 =Meh

3 = OK

4 = Solid

5 = Bomb

Acting/ Performance

X

Comments:
John Boyega evidently took the whole acting budget because he brought a stellar performance and everyone else was just phoning it in.

Writing/Screenplay

X

Comments:
I didn't see the first movie, so I can only judge this film as a stand alone project. And this stand alone story was just meh. I felt like the writers were just checking off boxes of necessities for a generic action movie. I can't comment on the first movie, but this film didn't add anything to the franchise.

Cinematography

X

Comments:
For a film about giant robots fighting giant monsters, it was surprisingly very visually uncaptivating.

Costume Design

X

Comments:
The wardrobe was nothing special.  I expected them to be less similar to clothing of today - more futuristic, but it was just plain. The Jaeger suits were pretty cool though!

Editing/Special Effects

X

Comments:
The fight scenes were underwhelming. It kind of felt like watching an  old Power Rangers episode. But I did like the cuts between the Jaegers fighting and the pilots inside.

Sound/Music

X

Comments:
The music was nothing special, and added nothing to the scenes.

Overall Rating (average the rating numbers above)  - 2.8/5.0

Recommendation: Nah!

Pacific Rim: Uprising is a generic action movie about giant robots and giant monsters. My overall consensus of this film is underwhelming. I did't watch the first Pacific Rim, but if it was any good, this film did it a disservice. Evidently, the first film wad good enough to warrant a sequel, but the quality of the 2nd film can almost guarantee the end of this franchise.  I wouldn't recommend this film, unless you're a fan of the previous film. And even then, you really could just wait until it comes on TV. Overall this film is nothing special and everyone can pass on it.
