Hello World,
I'm back with another movie review! If you read my post on Tuesday, you might be a little surprised, but for whatever reason this morning I felt compelled to write this review, so I'm just going to lean into it before I change my mind. Besides, this movie was on one of my top 10 most anticipated movies of 2021, so I would be remise not to write a review.
In the Little Things, Deputy Sheriff Joe "Deke" Deacon (Denzel Washington) partners with Sgt. Jim Baxter (Rami Malek) to catch a serial killer in LA, and the investigation brings up things of Deke's past that are still haunting him, and things take an even worst turn with the arrival of Jared Leto's character, Albert Sparma, their main suspect.

Ratings
1 = Trash | 2 =Meh | 3 = OK | 4 = Solid | 5 = Bomb
Acting/ Performance | X | |||||
Comments: The best part of this film is watching 3 Oscar Award-winning actors play off each other. Although Washington and Malek carry most the load throughout the film, it's Leto's creepy sinister performance that really stands out!
Writing/Screenplay | X | |||||
Comments: The writing in my opinion is the weakest element in the film. The story is nothing completely original or special, but it gets the job for a crime thriller. It creates enough suspense to keep the audience engaged, but some of the reveals are almost anticipated.
Cinematography | X | |||||
Comments: For whatever reason this film takes place in the 90s, so there is an attention to detail in making sure the world of the film looks like 90s LA.
Costume Design | X | |||||
Comments: Each costume seemed to be detailed to fit each character, while also fitting the style trends of the 90s.
Editing/Special Effects | X
Comments: The editing gave the film a nice flow, so the audience could get a true feel of the turmoil that Washington's character was experiencing, through the weaving in of the flashbacks and the creepy dream sequences.
Sound/Music | X | |||||
Comments: The score of this film isn't particularly memorable, but it gets the job done. It's essential for thrillers to have angsty suspense music as the plot builds up, and it does. It catered to the story well-enough, but didn't really add anything.
Overall Rating (average the rating numbers above) - 3.67/5.0 |
Recommendation: Watch! 😀
The Little Things ticks all the boxes for a throwback crime thriller, so fans of the genre will find it familiar, which can be a good thing or bad thing. Some might find it unoriginal and too similar to other films in the genre, but others might enjoy it because they don't really make films like this anymore. I fall in the latter group. I really enjoyed this film. The script is not great, but does it have to be when you have great actors that can sell it? The actors themselves will keep you engaged until the reveal after reveal after reveal ending. Overall, if you like crime thrillers or you just want to see Jared Leto be creepy as all get out, I'd recommend this movie!
Au Revoir,
