Ratings
1 = Trash | 2 =Meh | 3 = OK | 4 = Solid | 5 = Bomb
Acting/ Performance | X | |||||
Comments: All the actors in the film provide outstanding and memorable performances, but the leading role by Colin Firth is outstanding. His performance as George is both captivating and haunting. He manages to portray George's constant grief and constant hiding as he tries to act like a man that has it all together, without giving away too much emotion. It is superb, but all the actors really bring their actors to life very well.
Writing/Screenplay | X | |||||
Comments: The basis of the film is really a simple story. It's just one day in a man's life, but it's written beautifully to add little complexities and intrigue. The film is written from a first person point of view, so we get a stream of conscious from George throughout the film, and then the writers expertly weave in flashbacks as George reflects. And then the dialogue is actually meaningful and adds value to the story, and not just filler.
Cinematography | X | |||||
Comments: This is a beautifully shot film, which I guess is to expected from a fashion designer as a director. Every scene is set perfectly, and you can tell every prop was placed with a purpose.
Costume Design | X | |||||
Comments: It comes as no surprise that the costumes in this film was great. This is a Tom Ford film. The film takes place in the 1960s, and all the costumes were both fashionable and of the time.
Editing/Special Effects | X
Comments: I really enjoyed how this movie was edited, particularly on how that it wove flashbacks in and out of the present story. There is a recurring seemingly random dream sequence that is little strange at first, but as the film progresses, you'll see it fits with the overall story for the character.
Sound/Music | X | |||||
Comments: The score was the perfect backdrop to the story. It added the appropriate weight and feeling to the scenes.
Overall Rating (average the rating numbers above) - 4.5/5.0 |
Recommendation: Watch! 😀
A Single Man stars Colin Firth as George a college professor in the 1960s who is grieving the loss of his longtime partner, and plans to commit suicide. The film follows George throughout his regular day as he gets his affairs in order and meets with various people in his life, as he decides if he can go living. The film also stars Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hault and Matthew Goode in supporting roles, and was directed by Tom Ford. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys character-driven dramas. It is a well-written and beautifully shot film. Colin Firth gives an outstanding performance, and the rest of the cast gives great performances as well. This was my first film of 2021, and it was a great way to start the year. It's a haunting and gloomy film, but also beautiful and hopeful. If you have access to Netflix, I definitely recommend giving it a watch.
Au Revoir,
~Kerin
